2011 is set to be a huge year for yousef, and arguably his strongest yet in the production field. after spending much of 2010 recording remixes and productions for other leading labels yousef has come back super-strong on his own seminal circus recordings proven here if needed by his latest vinyl production. it is centered on a very simple premise. taking 2 pieces of music and recreating them with yousefs indiscernibly brilliant club night in mind. a resolutely dance floor-focused ep, that combine to create a unique aural tapestry representative of the circus and yousefs own musical evolution. each is an intricate and heartfelt paean of love to circus and the huge impact it has had on both clubland and yousefs career for the last almost nine years, with the clubs birthday approaching this september. yousef says that, >the ep is a special project for me and one that is indicative of the way im progressing. getting to re-shape these tracks from some of my most respected peers has been a great opportunity to craft them with that special circus sound<

octave one announce new album love by machine a year after their impressive last album burn it down, detroit techno legends octave one are back with a nine track double ep that again shows they are masters of big hypnotic grooves. entitled love by machine, the albums name is a nod to the fact that the burden brothers are such revered masters of their hardware. both in the studio, where they cook up atmospheric house and techno with soaring synths and vocals and also in the live arena, where they are celebrated as one of the most accomplished and forward thinking performers in the game today. that is all the more impressive when you bear in mind they have been active since the 80s, most often releasing on their own 430 west label, which is where they appear again here. say lenny: weve been exploring the theme of connection with this project. how technology gives us the illusion that we are closer to each other more than ever. at some point humanity crossed a line where the devices that we created to bring us together are the same devices that are blocking us from organic experiences.

love notes from brooklyn offers up this platter from a very exciting new brooklyn artist, subtenant. as it says on the tin, the artisanal acid ep is heavy on the 303 squelches and emotional content. each track has a unique pairing of soul and heavy acid funk. evergeen soul is the clear lead track here, using a female snippet to keep this otherwise tough little number dancefloor friendly. this track is then reworked by detroit underground darling, d marc cantu, who pitches things up into funky rave territory. the flip side sees the title track feature the most soulful chords on the entire record, and then on the b2 the artist himself takes to the mic on know how it feels. this whole ep feels live and direct from the brooklyn underground.

italian trio raw elements debuts on resopal with two tracks on their alquemia ep. with careful consideration and an acute attention to detail, each of the tracks contributes its unique vision to raw elements first package. the title track is a high-tempo minimal techno number, picking up linear momentum verse after verse while jetlag shows the trios shadowy, percussive style. no matter the time or place, there is something here for everyone. early plays by hawtin and dubfire.

thule records camp is hitting it hard these days. this time its a collaboration between two pioneers within the icelandic techno scene. on the a-side, we have static, a hypnotic groove with indistinguishable voices and shimmering dub chords, and Útkall, minimalistic dub techno mantra. on the flipside we have the heavily-rhythmic sedna, where the drums and bass compliment each other in such a way that it might cause involuntary muscle movements, and at last timelaps, a delicate minimalistic voyage. ohm is best known for his releases on force inc with exos. octal industries, a veteran who has already gained a respectable reputation within the idm community under his ruxpin pseudonym, returns to his origins with this collaboration. thule records is considered by many to be a pioneer in the field of dub-influenced techno music and was a starting point for many of iceland‘s most renowned electronic musicians.

normal bias are two good friends - yac and 77 - who both went through punk rebellion, death metal fumes, the fall of the berlin wall, and even managed to settle down in life. along the way they listened to 80s/90s transformation period rebel vibes through a filter of dub - a sound and a tradition that they have always remained faithful to. each of them is highly regarded on the polish dub/dub techno scene in their own right, and now they combine forces, skills and equipment to create a modern take on a sound that unites studio one and berlin s chain reaction legacies. this vinyl lpweighs 180g.

adelaide duo warren raww present a 12” that ups the energy of their july ep, whilst still delivering on their own brand of melodic, synth-laden house music. this time flanked by comrades arthur miles and freddie norwood, they add to the already high volume of talent currently emanating from australia.
the a side offerings shift between the more low-end driven aspect of warren raww’s production style, with off-kilter bass lines, punchy percussion and contemplative chord progression. the b side strips things back a bit further with a track each from arthur miles and freddie norwood. gliding pads, raw percussion, broken beats and rolling drums all melt together to deliver an essential slab of house music.

the fourth laq is proudly made by attic’s owner fabrizio lapiana. his melodic techno taste is employed into each track moving from hypnotic hard strings of the “cold in summer” to the sour and acidic groove of “acid smiles” (both on the first side). in the b-side fabrizio goes into more hypnotic and obsessive sound. a sort of progressive-techno vibes served to people who never-stop dancing.

manchester native alex coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12”s for the likes of black acre, livity sound and bloc. with gamma ray burst, the next in his series of releases on london low-end specialists tempa, coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. with the record’s title track, coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track’s most intense moments. ‘ground zero’ revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin ‘alpha decay’ are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. showing his diverse abilities, ‘phase two’ is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged ‘ascent’. closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of ‘distant resonance’, alex coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.

with this ep best works records would like to pre-sent a new artist - luis junior. no stranger to the game! madrid-based luis junior has been a dj and music producer for more than 20 years. in 1993 he re-leased his first 12-inches starting to build a disco-graphy of genre-defying music that pushes forever forward, designing new stylistic frameworks and breaking new artistic ground with each successive production. luis has grown into one of the most cut-ting edge and inspiring artists in spanish electronic music. his versatile production skills are clearly displayed here from soulful and folkloristic influences to techno. the first track on the ep “don’t give up on me” fea-tures singer sobi thurairatnam with sultry vocals and a stong pop-appeal. d-nox and beckers tranform it into a club burner for the early hours. floidos on the back-side is more of techno-orientated banger and with pasion luis junior manages to integrate some spanish flamenco sounds without getting to obvious.

the purpose of dm001 was to create a versatile compilation of tracks with the idea of exploring the limitless boundaries of electronic music. for the labels first release it was fortunate enough to work with an array of talented producers from all over the world. each of which has their own defining sound. dm001 is a non profit release, both vinyl and digital, with the digital release containing more tracks. all profits made from this release will be donated to the international rescue committee in efforts to aid syrian refugees.

richy ahmed launches his new imprint, four thirty two, with a self-produced two-track single, “put me in a trance”, featuring the vocal talents of gloria adereti and a collaboration with up and coming producer, janson. the new label is a back to basics, analogue vision, directed by richy, which will include original material, unearthed and undiscovered artist appearances, and remixes from the richy and janson alias love hurtz, as well as featuring a variety of vocalists from surrounding circles. each release will have a clear focus on the sound of vinyl and clean-cut imagery presented with each record.

Æ is the third part of bjarki triptych of lps to be released this year. Æ is a particularly icelandic form, pronounced “i” in english, bjarki thinks it just looks good. here it is a selection of music that is at its core quite simple, with restrained instrumentation, made on hardware and features a selection of older works and the most recent produced just weeks ago. bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dance floor tracks he doesn’t seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrates very well. his music is at times cinematic and there’s a story behind each track. bjarki’s music always has something to do with him personally, but he’d rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets.

rnt is going back to the roots of their reserve series with rose cutz 2, a pack of burners and heaters from rose records honchos luvless and m.ono. each producer takes a side, delivering a little something for any time of night, from the up tempo stomp of eins a legge to the slow analogue pulse of file save as. a rose by any other name is still a banging record!

folie a deux is releasing their first vinyl ep on hamburg based home label tach & nacht! this stunning 4 track ep consists out of 2 original tracks and 2 strong remixes from andrea ljekaj and malbetrieb. the journey starts with “pulse”, a track full of ambient sounds and dark beats sounding like the night. continuing with“axon”, a deep story containing a wide range of emotions, which are expressed by complex and dark melodies. on the b side we come across andrea ljekaj’s “pulse remix” which takes you on an intense groove with wide strings representing sun rays breaking through pulse’s dark night. in the end maltrieb does the job by ending the journey with a perfectly balanced track. bringing the atmosphere back to a positive and chill vibe. each track is a different chapter of a story called pulse ep by folie a deux.
